Structural steel day 3

Weather was either really cold or it was heavy snow for the past 7 days. Finally today is a slight warmer day with day time temperature of -2°C. Crew from AMX Steel is here continue their work on the structural steel. Last time they were here, some drawing/measurement mistake was discovered and they had to re-fabricate 6 beams with the correct measurement.

The beams are individually lifted in place. Then the crew uses the scissor lift to fasten the beam onto the columns using bolts. And sometimes the crew will have to climb alone the beam to the other side to  fasten both side.

Here’s a little video of the installation of one of such beams. And this house has just over 40 beams to be installed onto the 8 columns. The largest beams are 21′-10″ long W310x45 which is about 12-5/16″ tall and 6-1/2″ wide. The smallest beams are 5′-8″ long C130x10 which is about 4″ tall by 1-5/8″ wide. That is indeed an crazy amount of structural steel for a small house sitting at only 45′ long by 19′ wide.

The crew arrived here around 8:30am to clear the snow. The steel arrived around 10:15am and the crew worked all the way until 5:30pm. And here’s the work in progress at the end of the day. Most of the large beans are in place. There’s a few more left to go. Then they will have to go through all the connections and install all the bolts and tighten them all down.

Here’s a photo from my back yard at 157 Chisholm. If you take away the construction equipment, it’s almost feel like a piece of abstract art.

Here’s a time-elapsed video for the day. Tomorrow the crew will be here again, and figure crossed that I can get all the structural steel work completed by the end of the week.
