Deck day 1

The construction of the rear deck has started. My neighbour at 161 Chisholm and I are using the same contractor The Deck Guys to create a deck for both of us. My deck is a very small 5 foot wide deck that has 16′ wide stairs. I’ve choose to use composite decking with hidden fasteners to give that sleek clean modern look as well as simple maintenance.

Here’s the aftermath of the drilling for all the holes for footings.

These are the holes dug for the deck footing. I have specified 4 footings for the width of the deck. Because the house has EIFS on the outside, we decided not to cut into the EIFS and secure a ledger again the sheathing. The details required to make the ledger area water tight is too complicated and too easy for typical contractors to do something wrong. It’s much simpler just to add 4 more footings right at the foundation of the house and support the deck that way. There’s four more hole dug to support the stairs which runs the full width of the deck.
